The thesis I.

There is a number that haunts every beautiful website: the proportion of visitors who leave before it has even finished loading. A great design can win the eye in fifty milliseconds and still lose the visitor in the next two seconds if the page is slow, janky or fragile. This is the part of conversion most agencies treat as someone else's problem. We treat it as the foundation, because no amount of visual craft survives a build that makes people wait, or breaks on the device they actually used.

The economics are unforgiving. Study after study finds that conversions fall measurably with every additional fraction of a second of load time, and that a large share of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes more than about three seconds to become useful. Slowness doesn't announce itself in your analytics as "lost sales" — it shows up as a quietly high bounce rate and a conversion rate that never quite reaches its potential. The cost is invisible precisely because the visitors who left never registered as anything at all.

And speed is only the most visible half. A site also has to not break — across browsers, across devices, under load, at the exact moment a customer is ready to pay. It has to be accessible, so it works for everyone and keeps the brand on the right side of the law. And it has to be built on clean, maintainable foundations, so it can be improved for years rather than rebuilt in eighteen months. A visitor never sees your code, and that is exactly why it is so easy to under-invest in. What they feel is its consequences: how fast the page appears, whether it responds instantly to a tap, whether it holds together on their slightly old phone on a patchy connection, whether the checkout works on the first try. Every one of those is an engineering decision, and every one of them moves the conversion rate. The build is invisible right up until the moment it costs you a customer.

The single biggest lever is speed, and it is almost always squandered in the same way: heavy images served at full size, a stack of third-party scripts each adding its own delay, a page that loads everything before it shows anything. The fix is not glamorous — it is discipline. A performance budget agreed up front, media optimised ruthlessly, code split so the page becomes useful as fast as possible, and every third-party tag justified or removed. Done well, the result is a site that feels instant, and a conversion rate that quietly reflects it.

An e-commerce brand had a beautiful store that was quietly too slow on mobile — until a front-end rebuild let the same shoppers actually buy.

The store looked the part — polished design, strong brand, healthy ad spend driving traffic to it. But on a typical mobile connection it took over five seconds to become usable, weighed down by oversized images and a stack of third-party scripts. Most of the traffic was mobile, and a large share of it was leaving before the first product even appeared. The design was winning the eye and the build was losing the sale, in the gap of a few seconds nobody was watching.

We rebuilt the front end for speed without touching the look. Images were optimised and served responsively, the script stack was audited and trimmed, code was split so the page became interactive far sooner, and the critical buy path was hardened and tested on real devices. The store looked virtually identical — it simply arrived in roughly half the time and never stumbled on the way to the checkout.

Load time more than halved, the page passed Core Web Vitals, and the mobile conversion rate climbed with it.

The gains compounded. A faster store converted more of the existing paid traffic, so the same ad budget bought more orders; passing Core Web Vitals lifted organic visibility as well; and a leaner codebase made every future change cheaper and safer to ship. The rebuild paid for itself out of sales the brand was already so close to making — which is exactly why we treat the build, not just the design, as part of conversion.
